“Balam Pichkari” was a track that we fell in love with from the first dholki (drum) beats that start the song.

The song, from the movie Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani is about the Indian festival of Holi, where you wear white and are doused with colored powder and water. “Balam’s” lyrics are as mischievous as the festival. Ranbir Kapoor’s character, Bunny is  flirting with Naina played by Deepika Padukone.

They sing:

Balam Pichkaari jo tu ne mujhe maari
To seedhee saadee chhoree sharaabi ho gayi

Oh lover, when you hit me with your pichkaari (water gun full of colored water).
This good girl became a lush

In addition to teaching this song in our fitness classes, we just had to share dance choreography with the world.

So, for your summer wedding performance or just for the next random Tuesday you feel like being a Bollywood superstar, here is the first breakdown to “Balam Pichkari”

Kajal’s dad’s first response was “Don’t forget to get health insurance!”

While scared for their daughters, both of our dads have been supporters of Doonya because of the passion they see we have!

What they may not know is that they played a HUGE role in our decision to create this program of spreading smiles and health through Bollywood dance.

Priya’s dad drove her to dance, gymnastics, karate, and soccer games every night as a kid. He was her biggest supporter then and is the same way today. His advice is always in the back of her mind, and his face is in the background of almost all of the photos from recent Doonya events!

“My dad has always put people before himself and definitely before money,” Kajal says. “He has taught me that doing good brings reward in all kinds of ways. Truly living a selfless life will be what brings you to success.” He’s taught Kajal that following your heart is the key to happiness. He’s lived his life in this way and is a living-breathing-singing role model.

Both of our dads have inspired us to live and spread healthy, happy energy to make a difference in the world.
Kajal’s dad provides us with healthy/ayurvedic/eastern medicine tips based on his medical expertise as a physician (he’s our consultant for a lot of our Doonya posts!). And over the years, Priya’s dad has racked up so much health knowledge and advice from voracious passion that she’s ready to give him the Dr. title.

This Father’s Day we’re sending a big thank you to our fathers for making us the women we are today!

Happy Father’s Day to all the Doonya Dads!

We’re big fans of music that take South Asian sounds and mash them up with western beats. One group to really own this space is Culture Shock, a Canadian based group. One of our favorite tracks is “Bombay Bo” for it’s music that transports our co-founder straight to Klub Kajal.

One of our instructors, Shailee Adinolfi, held a Bolly-Hip Hop choreography workshop in DC last week. As our resident hip hop expert, we weren’t surprised that her choreography was amazing — and knew that you’d love to watch and learn her routine!
